Lynn Zimmerman

A Field Guide to Watercoloris a 10- or 12-week course of study into the unique characteristics of watercolor paint.

JOIN US in experimenting, testing, and exploring the practical uses for all your watercolor paints. Each artist who participates will work through their own book. We'll sample our colors and use them to better understand color hue and relationships. We'll look at understanding transparency and opacity and apply it to our paintings. Does the value of any particular color make a difference? We'll play with ways to use intensity, staining, and granulating. Each lesson moves into using our discoveries within a painting. We don't just gather information, we apply our new-found knowledge right away in our own paintings.

ONE OF THE BEST PARTS Each artists creates their own color wheel with samples of the paints they own and love. In building and using their own color wheel, painters come into an even deeper understanding of their colorful tools. Artists who have taken this course refer back to their book over and over in preparing for and painting new work.

ADDITIONAL TOOLS such a couple color wheels, a value scale, and some extra bits for the exercises are included in the book. Everything is ready to go, you just need to gather your paints — all your watercolor paints!

INTERESTED? Please let me know. I'm gathering artists for the next round, online.
I'm hoping to run this again in the fall of 2026
(This is not for the beginner watercolor painter.)
